There have been many influential people throughout history. Some have changed the course of nations, others have shaped our thinking, and still others have left behind teachings that continue to influence generations.
But there has never been anyone like Jesus Christ.
The apostle John describes Jesus as the only begotten Son of God (John 3:16). The Greek word translated only begotten carries the idea of being one of a kind, unique. Jesus isn’t simply another religious leader or moral teacher. He is the Son of God, and understanding who He is helps us understand why His life, death, and resurrection matter so deeply.
Jesus Was Unique in His Birth
From the beginning, God promised a Redeemer who would defeat the power of sin and death. In Genesis 3:15, God declared that the seed of the woman would crush the serpent’s head.
That promise pointed forward to Jesus Christ.
When the angel Gabriel appeared to Mary, he told her she would conceive and give birth to a Son who would be called the Son of God (Luke 1:30–35). Jesus’ conception by the Holy Spirit and His birth to the virgin Mary set Him apart from every other person who has ever lived.
His coming was not an ordinary birth. It was part of God’s plan to redeem humanity.
Jesus Is More Than a Man
One of the most remarkable statements Jesus ever made was to the religious leaders who challenged Him: “Before Abraham was, I am” (John 8:58).
Jesus wasn’t merely claiming to have existed before Abraham. His words pointed to His divine identity and echoed God’s revelation of Himself to Moses at the burning bush: “I AM WHO I AM” (Exodus 3:14).
The apostle Paul further explains Christ’s supremacy in Colossians 1:16–17, declaring that all things were created through Him and for Him, and that He is before all things.
Jesus is not simply a figure who appeared in history. He is the eternal Son of God.
Jesus Came to Redeem Us
Why does His identity matter so much?
Because Jesus came to do what no ordinary human being could do: reconcile us to God.
Romans 6:23 tells us that the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. Through His death on the cross, Jesus paid the price for our sin. Through His resurrection, He conquered death and offers us the hope of eternal life.
And He is alive today, interceding for us and inviting us into a personal relationship with Him.
You don’t have to remain separated from God by your sin. You can turn to Jesus, ask Him for forgiveness, and invite Him to be Lord of your life.
Jesus Christ is unique because He is the Son of God, the Savior who died for our sins, and the risen Lord who offers us new life.
The most important question isn’t simply what you know about Jesus. It’s this: Do you know Him personally?
